After working as a window dresser and in retail (at places like Laura Ashley) Gill Archer knew it was time to start her own business.
She began with the Shabby Shack. A small workshop behind the florists on the main street in her home town of Bovingdon. Her creations were in shops around herftordshire, and commision work was coming in at a rate. She quickly outgrew the workshop and set out looking for somewhere bigger.
That's when she came across rose 'n' lily. After speaking with Vicky (the former owmer) she was offered the rose 'n' lily business, which she snapped up in May 2012. The workshop and location were perfect.
With a little help from her friends, she gave the place a makeover, and partitioned off a workshop. Now a flourishing business, Gill still loves every minute of it - her enthusiasm is there for all to see.

The shop opening hours are:

Monday to Saturday 9 AM to 6 PM

You can sometimes catch us here on a Sunday too, but it is best to ring and check first - just to be sure

If you see anything you like on our website, particularly the larger furniture etc, give us a call and we can reserve it for you until you can make it in.

For some of our smaller items you can pay over the phone on our card machine and we can mail it out.

At our shop we have arranged it so that each of the four corners is a different roomset.

The Country Kitchen/Diner - big dressers, family tables, tea towels and crockery
A main living area - side tables, floor lamps, cushions and throws, sideboards
The Office - desks, shelving units, art work, table lamps, chairs
The Childs Bedroom - a bed, storage, toys, blankets, bedside tables
Ajoined to the shop is our workshop, where we spend a lot of time sanding, cleaning, varnishing, painting and giving it that shabby look.

If you've given us a piece to rejuvenate, you can always pop by and see how it's going, as well as looking round the shop at the same time!

We choose our materials carefully, largely from experience, based on the particular piece or finishes required. For the painted finishes, we find Farrow and Ball paint to be one of the best, as they have a great selection of colours, and a very hard-wearing finish.

Something we specialise in is taking your old tired furniture that fits perfectly into a space in your home but doesn't match the look you have chosen. Honestly, the biggest proportion of our business is commission work - both new and repeat customers. Brings us your furniture (or we can come and collect it in our van) and we will transform it so it's just right.

It's not only wood furniture. The picture on the right shows a commission we were asked to do for a range of pieces, including a chest of drawers, a dresser and the lanterns you can see.

More importantly, the customer had a specific colour scheme in mind, as they had already redecorated the room these were intended for. Some of the pieces were already owned, and were repainted to match the new scheme, and some were recent purchase - they matched in style but not in appearance.

Give us a call to discuss your requirements on how we may be able to help with those finishing touches or grand statement pieces.

No room is complete without the right soft furnishings. We have our very own curtains and blinds installation service, as well as reupholstery specialist.

We stock a number of complimentary fabrics that can be used for curtains, cushions or seat coverings. If there is something particualr you have in mind or already own, we can also take your fabric and recover for you.

The fabrics we stock are all 100% cotton or cotton/linen mix, giving that equally important texture to match the style.
If you would like to stock some of our furniture in your own store, get in touch - we are always open to new avenues.

Equally, if you are a designer or manufacturer (particularly in the local area) and think your products would compliment our ranges and ethos, we would also love to hear from you.

We often place signature pieces on display in other shops too - there are a few local ones in Bovingdon and Hemel Hempstead. If you would like to use one of our pieces for a display unit, or window dressing, again, get in touch - we may be able to strike a deal!
